Brandywine Red is a good-tasting heirloom tomato that is vigorous and bears large-lobed, beefsteak-shaped fruit. The very vigorous plants bear fruits weighing up to 2 lbs. that are perfect for slicing. The thin-skinned, pinkish-red tomatoes are flavorful but not acidic. Pennsylvania Amish heirloom dating to 1885. Regular leaved plants. Indeterminate.

Plant outdoors when the danger of frost is past and night temperatures consistently remain above 55 degrees Fahrenheit. If an unexpected late frost is forecasted, protect young plants with plastic sheeting or other cover. Set plants 2 to 3 feet apart. Tomatoes can be buried up to the top 2 sets of leaves.
Plant tomato plants in well-drained soil and keep them well-watered but not soggy. A thick layer of mulch helps conserve moisture and control weeds; water the plants once a week, but avoid getting the leaves wet. You may want to choose an organic fertilizer formulated specifically for tomatoes.
Indeterminate tomato varieties often perform best when provided with a trellis or support, since this protects them from various pests and diseases in connection with too much soil contact.
